<h3>God has a sense of humor. And if you know Him and you're paying attention, you can catch it often.</h3>But sometimes He comes crashing through with something so loud, so perfectly timed, so absolutely hilarious, that you can't do anything but laugh, cry, and worship all at once.This episode is one of those stories.<h3>The Joke That Started It All</h3>For about a year, Erik had a running joke in the Frederickson household. He'd come home and tell Mayana he had a gift for her. She'd get excited. And then he'd say. "I got you a minivan."&nbsp;Every single time.Mayana's response never changed. She didn't want a minivan. She would never drive a minivan. It wasn't funny the first time, and it certainly wasn't funny the fifteenth time.But Erik kept doing it anyway.What they didn't know was that God was watching. And apparently, He thought it was hilarious too.<h3>The Road That Led to Ohio</h3>Before the minivan story lands, you need to understand the journey that brought them there.Early in their marriage, Erik and Mayana felt called to move to Utah. God was doing incredible things: house meetings, people were being healed and saved, a kind of underground move of the Spirit. During this time they felt God lead them to move to Utah, so they went.&nbsp;It was hard. Harder than expected. Mayana, a Brazilian who had never seen snow before, found herself shoveling it. Ten months in, she looked at Erik and said simply, "I'm going back to San Diego. You can come if you want, but I'm leaving."&nbsp;Erik didn't hesitate. She was more important. They went back.They landed in San Diego, living in a friend's back room, nearly a year of trusting God while Erik was building his coaching practice from the ground up, driving for Uber at night to make ends meet, and watching Holy Spirit encounter people in his car while driving Uber almost every single night.Eventually, the call came to move again. This time, Ohio.Mayana wasn't about to make the same mistake twice. She came out for ten days first to check it out. In those ten days, she experienced rain, a light snow that melted by noon, freezing cold, and then heat. Classic Ohio spring.She said yes anyway. Something about the community here, people who had been friends since preschool, who did life together without needing an appointment, called to something deep in her.They packed everything into a U-Haul, loaded up their boys, and drove six days across the country. Erik got the job offer on day two of driving. Twenty, maybe thirty minutes after arriving, they were unloading the U-Haul when their neighbor came over. She had been to some of the house meetings Erik had done in Ohio before the move. They knew each other a little.She walked up and said warmly, "We are so glad you guys are here. My husband and I were talking, and we just want to bless you. We want to give you our minivan."&nbsp;Erik started laughing.He told her about the joke, the year of coming home and saying, babe, I got you a minivan, the eye rolls, the complete lack of amusement from his wife. Then he said, "I'm going to go get Mayana. Don't explain anything. Just tell her what you told me."He went inside. Brought Mayana out. The neighbor said it again, totally matter of fact, "We want to give you our minivan."&nbsp;Mayana's face said everything. She looked at the neighbor, then at Erik, rolling her eyes. "A minivan? I hate minivans."&nbsp;The neighbor pointed down the street, "No, see that one right there? That's yours."&nbsp;The next day, they brought it over with a bow. Cleaned, full of gas, wrapped in a bow, a free minivan from a neighbor they barely knew, on the very day they arrived in their new city.Mayana loved that minivan. Because God gave it to her. And you can't help but love something God gives you, even when He's clearly laughing while He does it.But That's Not Even the Best PartThe same day the minivan arrived, a friend deposited $7,000 into Erik's PayPal account.No warning. No request. Just, here.Seven. The number of completion in the Bible. A new season. The other side of the test.The storm was over. The foundation had held. And God showed up not just with provision, but with a punchline that only He could have written.<h3>What God Does in the Mess</h3>This episode isn't really about a minivan. It's about what happens when you go through the storms of life, leaning on God instead of running from Him.Erik and Mayana were honest about it: Utah was hard. Living in someone else's back room was humbling. Driving across the country on faith with two kids and no certainty was filled with uncertainties. These were real struggles, real seasons of not knowing what was next.But on the other side of those storms, they came away with something that can't be taught in a classroom or a Sunday service. They came away knowing God a little better.&nbsp;"When you go through it over and over," Mayana said, "you get to a point that you start partnering with God and say, okay, what are you doing here? You learn to trust."And Erik put it simply: "You will trust God to the degree that you believe He's good."<h3>Encountering God in the Storm — Mayana's Hurricane Ian Story</h3>There's another story woven into this episode that deserves its own full episode, and they'll be sharing it soon.During Hurricane Ian in September 2022, Erik and Mayana and their three boys stayed in their Southwest Florida home as the storm parked directly on top of them for eight hours. The sustained winds were just five miles an hour under a Category 5. Two by fours were flying past the windows. Garbage cans were airborne.Mayana, who had battled panic attacks in her past, began to feel one coming on. She was on the floor, hands over her ears, crying out to God,, "Help me, help me, you need to help me right now."&nbsp;And then something happened that she will never forget.She felt hands come down on the sides of her face. Fingers pointing downward, cradling her head. The presence of God, physical, unmistakable, undeniable, settled on her in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane.She went from barely holding it together to standing up with a look on her face Erik had never seen before. Peaceful. Still. Almost like she was drunk, but not on wine."Be filled with the Spirit," Paul wrote in Ephesians. Not with wine, but with the presence of God.She felt those hands for over two hours. She didn't want it to end.<h3>God Uses the Broken Ones</h3>Before they close, Erik and Mayana land on something important.If you think you have to be qualified, cleaned up, together, and impressive for God to use you, you've missed the story entirely.He came for the lost. The broken. The ones who know they need a doctor. He chose twelve disciples who were fishermen, tax collectors, political radicals, and social outcasts. He picked the worst of society, transformed their lives, and used them to confuse everyone who thought they had it all figured out."How much more glory does He get when He uses somebody everybody looks at and says, there's no way that person can do that. That has to be God."That is the whole message. Not that we are capable. But that He is.<h3>A Prayer for You</h3>At the close of the episode, Mayana prayed over every person listening:"Father, we love you with all of our hearts. Thank you that you don't change based on anyone's circumstances, qualifications, or degrees. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. I pray you encounter your people. Reveal yourself to them. Surround them with your protection. Show them your love. Transform them inside out, Jesus. Get their hearts. Get their families. Unite them for your powerful purpose, in the name of Jesus Christ. God Has a Sense of Humor — What Happens When He Shows Up in the Mess

<h3>Most people spend their entire lives trying to figure out who they are, and never think to ask God.&nbsp;</h3>That's not an accusation. It's just the reality of the world we grew up in. Culture handed us a mirror and told us to look inward, to our achievements, our relationships, our feelings, our story, to find out who we are. And for a while, it works. Until it doesn't.If you've ever felt like you don't fully know who you are, or like the version of yourself you present to the world doesn't match what's happening on the inside, this is worth reading carefully.<h3>Why Identity Matters More Than Most People Realize</h3>Identity is not just a philosophical question. It is the foundation on which everything else is built.What you believe about who you are determines how you respond to failure. It determines whether you can receive correction without being destroyed by it. It determines whether you pursue change from a place of shame or a place of security. It shapes your relationships, your decisions, your patterns, and your daily life in ways most people never consciously examine.This is why the enemy works so hard to distort it. A person who doesn't know who they are is easy to manipulate, easy to shame, and easy to keep stuck. A person who knows who God says they are is a completely different story.<h3>The Problem With Building Identity on the Wrong Things</h3>Most people build identity on things that were never designed to hold it.Performance: what you accomplish, how well you do, whether you succeed or fail. When things go well, you feel worthy. When they don't, you feel like nothing.Relationships: who loves you, who approves of you, who you belong to. When those relationships are healthy, you feel secure. When they aren't, you feel lost.Your past: what you've been through, what's been done to you, what you've done. When your past defines you, it becomes a ceiling you can never rise above.None of these things are strong enough to carry the weight of identity. They shift. They fail. They change. And when they do, the person whose identity was built on them has nothing left to stand on.Jesus speaks to this in Matthew 7:24-27, where He gives us the illustration of two builders, one who builds on sand, the shifting foundations of this world, and one who builds on the Rock, Christ and His teachings.And what does it mean to build on the Rock? It means knowing how much God loves us, and knowing I am who He says I am, regardless of circumstances and opinions."I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." - Galatians 2:20The old self, the one defined by performance, by the past, by what others think, was crucified with Christ. A new identity was made available. It is not performance-based. It cannot be lost when you fail, stripped away when you sin, or diminished by what someone else thinks of you. It was declared over you by God Himself and secured by the finished work of Jesus on the cross.Here is what that actually means:You are a new creation. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." - 2 Corinthians 5:17You are chosen and loved. "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." - 1 Peter 2:9You are God's own workmanship. "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." - Ephesians 2:10These are not motivational statements. They are declarations of reality, truths about who you already are in Christ that exist independent of your feelings, your failures, or your past.<h3>Why Knowing This Changes Everything</h3>Here's the thing about identity in Christ: it doesn't just answer the question of who you are. It changes how you live.When you know you are a new creation, you stop trying to earn what God already gave you. When you know you are chosen and loved, you stop looking to people and performance to tell you whether you matter. When you know you are God's workmanship, you stop living in the paralysis of not knowing your purpose.Romans 12:2 puts it this way: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind."Transformation starts with identity. When the truth of who God says you are begins to replace the lies you've been living from, about your worth, your potential, your past, and your future, everything changes from the inside out. Not overnight. But deeply, and permanently.This is not behavior modification. This is a foundation replacement.<h3>The Gap Between Knowing and Living</h3>Here's the honest part: most believers have heard these truths. They've nodded along in church. They've underlined the verses.And they still don't fully live from them.That gap, between knowing who God says you are and actually living from that identity in your daily decisions, relationships, and patterns, is one of the most common struggles in the Christian life. It's often not a faith problem. It's an application problem. Truth that stays in your head never makes it to your hands.You tell the value of something by the price paid for it, and Jesus paid the highest price for us. He endured the pain, humiliation, suffering, accusations, betrayal, and the weight of the sin of the world because He loves us. He paid the price for us to be washed clean and given a new identity in Him, and He then supplied us with the grace to walk it out.&nbsp;"For His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence." - 2 Peter 1:3&nbsp;Closing that gap is exactly the work we do at Recovering Reality. What Does the Bible Say About Identity? Understanding Who You Are in Christ

<h3>Most people spend their entire lives trying to fix the outside, not realizing the real problem runs much deeper.</h3>In Episode 203 of <a data-mce-href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-recovering-reality-podcast/id1448492452" href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-recovering-reality-podcast/id1448492452" title="The Recovering Reality Podcast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Recovering Reality Podcast,</a> Erik Frederickson shares his own journey, from 13 years trapped in addiction, depression, and chaos, to finding a peace that no circumstance can touch. "The harder we struggle, the lower we sink."By the age of 26, it had never been worse. A suicide attempt, an overdose, and rock bottom after rock bottom. But this time, the brokenness was different; it was completely internal."I was completely empty, bankrupt, everything you could imagine."That internal emptiness became the turning point. Erik realized he had been trying to do life from the outside in, chasing success, happiness, and approval, and it simply did not work."We may experience some success. We may experience moments of happiness. But not true peace."<h3>The Difference Between Peace and Happiness</h3>One of the most powerful distinctions Erik makes in this episode is the difference between peace and happiness, and why chasing happiness will always leave you empty.Happiness is circumstantial. When things go well, you feel good. When things fall apart, you fall apart with them. It becomes a roller coaster with no end.Peace is something entirely different."The Bible talks about a peace that surpasses our ability to understand it, in Philippians. Peace is the presence of a person in the midst of circumstances, good ones and challenging ones."That person is Jesus.Real peace is not the absence of problems. It is the presence of God in the middle of them. It's truly about my emotional intelligence, my mental health, the peace; it only comes from Him."This is the core of everything Erik teaches at Recovering Reality. Whether the issue is addiction, depression, anxiety, broken relationships, or financial destruction, it all stems from the way we think. We all have a core belief system we operate from, and until that shifts, nothing on the outside changes for long.As the Bible puts it in Proverbs, "as a man thinks, so is he." And Romans 12 makes it plain, "be transformed by the renewing of your mind."&nbsp;"You're not going to solve a problem with the same thinking that created it." — Einstein<h3>What Is Spiritual Fitness?</h3>Erik introduces one of his most powerful frameworks in this episode, the concept of spiritual fitness.Just like physical fitness, transformation does not happen overnight. You cannot go from being 100 pounds overweight to your ideal health in a single day. The same is true spiritually."Spiritual fitness is like this, we decide, you know what, this isn't all going to change overnight. It's just not. Because it's my mindsets that got me to this place. It is my daily habits that got me here."The daily habits of spiritual fitness look like this:- Waking up and spending time with God first, before the world hits you with its noise - Reading the bible, books that fill your mind with truth and hope - Journaling, writing about what is going on in your mind and heart - Prayer, getting honest with God about where you are - Community and accountability, not doing the journey alone - Listening to content like podcasts, sermons, and audiobooks that renew your thinkingErik shares how a morning routine of solid spiritual fitness sets the tone for the day. "My lens is clear before I even face the day. My lens is in a place where I'm seeing different, I'm thinking different."This is not about earning something from God. It is about getting your mind aligned with what Jesus has already accomplished on the cross, and living from that place of truth rather than fear.<h3>The Car Full of Junk Analogy</h3>Erik paints a vivid picture of how most people arrive at the place of needing transformation.Imagine driving through life, and every problem that comes up, a bill, a broken relationship, a bad habit, you just toss it in the back seat. Deal with it later. And then one day you hit the brakes, and everything from the back seat comes flying to the front."It becomes overwhelming."That is the moment most people reach out for help. That is the moment the pile becomes too heavy to ignore. And that is exactly where transformation begins, not when life is easy, but when the weight of avoidance becomes unbearable.<h3>Building Your House on the Rock</h3>Erik closes this episode with one of Jesus's most powerful teachings, the parable of the wise and foolish builders from Matthew 7.The storms are coming. That is not a question. Jesus promised it."Just because we're living life the right way doesn't mean we're excluded from challenges and trials. As a matter of fact, it's a promise in the Bible."The question is not whether the storm will come. The question is what your foundation is made of when it does.When your foundation is solid rock, built through daily spiritual fitness, a relationship with Holy Spirit, and a renewed mind, the storm passes, and you clean up branches. When your foundation is sand, built on circumstances, performance, and outside-in living, the storm takes the whole house."I know my strength and foundation does not come from me. It comes from relationship with God."<h3>Where Do You Start?</h3>No matter where you are in your journey, whether you are in the middle of addiction, depression, relational destruction, or you simply know something needs to change, the starting place is the same.Today. One day at a time. From the inside out.Erik's encouragement is simple and practical:- Wake up and spend 10, 20, 30 minutes with God before the day starts - Read something that fills your mind with hope and truth - Journal what is going on inside - Get honest with someone you trust - Ask for help, it is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of strength"Asking for help is a sign of strength, because it shows that you know you're capable of more. You just need help to get there."Slowly but surely, the lens begins to shift. Hopelessness gives way to hope. Reactions become responses. And what felt like quicksand begins to feel like solid ground.That is transformation. That is the journey. God was there, even when she didn't know how to articulate it.But alongside those moments of quiet presence came something far darker: tormenting nightmares and episodes of sleep paralysis that haunted her for years.<h3>Tormented by Nightmares: A Battle She Fought Alone</h3>Long before Mayana came to faith in Jesus Christ, she was fighting a battle in the night. Recurring nightmares. Sleep paralysis. A terrifying figure, a large, bald man, who appeared in her dreams and represented pure fear.Growing up in Brazil, Mayana had experienced real trauma. Guns held to her head. A home invasion. Real fear that left deep wounds, the enemy was all too happy to exploit."The enemy, he's just a sore loser and throws cheap shots," Erik explains. "If someone has a hurt leg, he's going to sit there and kick him in the leg. That's how he operates."To cope, Mayana slept with a Catholic rosary on her wrist. When the sleep paralysis would come, she would grip the cross and pray, the Lord's Prayer, the Hail Mary, whatever she knew. And every single time, it would lift.Even then, God's power was at work. Even then, He was answering the cry of her heart.<h3>The Night Jesus Walked Into Her Nightmare</h3>After moving to San Diego, a Brazilian friend led Mayana to Christ. She began attending church, joining small groups, and growing in her faith. But she was living alone, her roommate had just moved out to get married, in an apartment in Ocean Beach, a neighborhood thick with New Age spirituality.And the nightmares came back.One night, Mayana was asleep when she felt it, the familiar grip of sleep paralysis. And there, in her room, she saw him. The figure from her dreams. Visible. Real. Standing in her bedroom."I am frozen," Mayana recalls. "You can't move, you can't talk, you can see it. But all that you can do is in your mind, which is pray, call the name of Jesus."And that is exactly what she did."He was there, standing, looking at me. And all of a sudden, at the same place that he was, it was like Jesus just came. And it was like this huge light invaded the same place that he was."Jesus appeared. In the natural. Visibly. He stretched His hands toward her head and audibly spoke one word:"Ask."In an instant, the torment was gone. The figure was gone. And in its place, light, peace, and the presence of Jesus Christ.Mayana has never had that nightmare again.<h3>What Mayana Did Next, and What Her Pastor Said</h3>After the encounter, Mayana called her pastor and friends. But instead of focusing on Jesus, she found herself fixating on the darkness, the fear, the figure, the paralysis.Her pastor stopped her."Mayana. You just encountered Jesus. And you are thinking about the negative part of it. You just saw Jesus."That reframe changed everything. The encounter wasn't about the enemy. It was about Jesus showing up. Jesus delivering. <h3>You already know something needs to change. The question isn't whether to get help, it's who to call.</h3>That question trips more people up than it should. A coach, a therapist, and a pastor all care about your well-being. All three can play a role in genuine transformation. But they are not interchangeable, and going to the wrong one for the wrong reason can leave you frustrated, stuck, and convinced that help doesn't work.Here's an honest breakdown of what each one actually does and how to know which one fits where you are right now.<h3>What a Therapist Does</h3>A therapist, also called a counselor or clinician, is a licensed mental health professional trained to diagnose and treat psychological conditions. Their primary focus is healing. They are equipped to work with trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief, abuse, and other conditions that require clinical care.Therapy is largely backward-facing. It creates space to process what has happened to you, to understand the wounds beneath the surface, and begin healing them with professional support.If you are in crisis, experiencing suicidal thoughts, navigating significant trauma, or struggling with a diagnosed mental health condition, therapy is not optional. It is the right and necessary starting point.Psalm 147:3 says, "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." God uses many means to bring healing, and licensed clinical care is one of them. Seeking a therapist is not a lack of faith. It is wisdom.<h3>What a Pastor Does</h3>A pastor is a spiritual shepherd. Their role is to preach truth, provide spiritual guidance, pray with their congregation, and walk alongside people through the challenges of faith and life.A good pastor is invaluable. They speak into your spiritual formation, hold you accountable to the truth of Scripture, and provide the kind of faith community that is essential to a healthy Christian life.But a pastor is not a therapist and is not a life coach. Most pastors are not clinically trained to treat trauma or mental health conditions. And while many are gifted counselors, their primary calling is spiritual oversight, not the structured, goal-oriented accountability that coaching provides.Hebrews 13:17 says, "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls." Pastoral care is irreplaceable. But it has a specific lane, and the best pastors know it.<h3>What a Life Coach Does</h3>A life coach is forward-facing. Where therapy focuses on healing the past and pastoral care focuses on spiritual oversight, coaching focuses on where you are going and what is getting in the way.A faith-based life coach helps you identify the patterns keeping you stuck, get clarity on what God is calling you toward, and build practical steps to close the gap between where you are and where you need to be. Coaching is not crisis care. It is not therapy. It is structured, honest, accountable forward movement, grounded in truth and personal responsibility.Proverbs 20:5 says, "Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out." That is what good coaching does: it draws out the clarity, direction, and next steps that are already inside you, waiting to be pulled to the surface.Coaching works best when you are stable but stuck. Do You Need a Life Coach, a Therapist, or a Pastor? How to Know Which One Is Right for You

<h3>There is a quiet message many women were taught, not always with words, but with images, ideals, and expectations. It said be strong by standing alone.</h3>Be safe by needing no one. Be powerful by controlling everything. Be whole by defining yourself.And at first, it felt empowering.But this message is not new. For more than a century, women have been slowly discipled by cultural narratives that redefined strength as self-sufficiency and freedom as independence. Through art, education, media, and social movements, the idea was repeated again and again that a woman must secure herself, define herself, and protect herself, because no one else will.Long before most of us were born, this belief was already being passed down. It did not arrive loudly. It arrived subtly. It showed up in magazines, classrooms, films, slogans, and imagery, teaching generations of women how to see themselves, what to value, and who to become.Over time, it reshaped what we admired. Calm detachment became strength. Emotional distance became wisdom. Control became safety. And slowly, dependence on God, on community, and on covenant was reframed as weakness.Many of us did not choose this belief system consciously. We inherited it. And while it promised freedom, many women quietly began to feel the cost.What Self-Sufficiency Actually CostsWe learned to hold ourselves together at all times. He created her to be relational, covered, and secure in Him."It is not good for man to be alone." - Genesis 2:18The Bible never celebrates self-rule. It never praises independence as the highest form of strength. Instead, it consistently calls us to dependence on God, the very place where peace, clarity, and real life are found."My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." - 2 Corinthians 12:9In God's Kingdom, weakness is not failure. It is the doorway to grace. And for the Christian woman who has spent years holding everything together, that is not a diminishment; it is the most freeing truth she will ever encounter.True strength for a woman was never meant to look like self-sufficiency. It was meant to look like surrender, not to culture, not to fear, but to the God who created her, knows her, and holds her completely.What Surrender Actually Looks LikeI know this personally.There was a time in my life when I believed my body was my own, my will was supreme, and my future depended on my ability to control it. I thought surrender would cost me everything. I thought needing God, really needing Him, not just acknowledging Him, would make me less.But Jesus did not meet me with condemnation. He met me with kindness.And as I laid down self-rule, I did not lose my life. I found it.What culture told me would limit me, God used to restore me. What I feared losing, He redeemed and multiplied. What I tried to manage in my own strength, He healed in His.That is the part of the story culture rarely tells women. That rest is not found in self-sufficiency. That peace does not come from control. That a woman's identity is not something she performs or constructs, it is something she receives.There Is Another WayTrue strength is not being untouchable. It is being held.True freedom is not needing anyone. It is knowing exactly whose you are.And if you feel tired, guarded, or fragmented, if you are exhausted from holding yourself together and performing a version of strength that was never yours to carry, it is not because you are failing.It may simply be because you were never meant to carry yourself."Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding." - Proverbs 3:5There is another way.
