And that is exactly why this conversation needed to happen.Why This Topic Hurts Our HeartsAfter years of working with people one on one, Erik and Mayana have noticed something that never stops being surprising. People who have been in church their entire lives, faithful, committed, sincere believers, who have no framework for hearing God speak to them personally.For many people, hearing God's voice feels like something reserved for prophets, super-spiritual people, or those with a special gift. It feels out of reach, foreign, maybe even a little strange.But here is the truth: not only can you hear His voice, you should be hearing His voice. It is the normal Christian life. And chances are, you are already hearing Him in some ways and simply have not recognized it yet.What "Hearing His Voice" Actually MeansThe foundation for this whole conversation is John 10:27 - My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me.Most people read that verse and funnel it down to one thing, an internal audible voice. But when you look at the Greek word used for "voice" here, it is the word phonē, from which we get our English word phonetics. And phonetics is not just about hearing someone speak out loud. It refers to the cadence, structure, and culture of a language, how that language communicates.You could read that verse the same way by saying: my sheep know how I communicate with them, and I know them, and they follow me.That changes everything.God is not limited to one channel. He is not confined to an audible voice in your head. He speaks through His Word, through circumstances, through peace that settles on you when you sit down to pray, through a verse that jumps off the page at just the right moment, through a situation that opens up right after you cried out to Him.When you prayed genuinely from your heart and a few weeks later found yourself in an environment where you were getting real help, that was God communciating to you. When that peace that surpasses understanding settled on you in the middle of a stressful situation, He was speaking. He is always communicating. Jesus literally felt it in His gut. He looked at a crowd of sick people and something rose up on the inside of Him, and He turned and healed them all.The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives inside the believer. The same Jesus who walked through the Gospels, patient with His disciples, full of compassion, moved by compassion, operating in power, that exact same Jesus wants to live that same way inside of you.What the world calls intuition, what we call a gut feeling, when we are genuinely soaking in His presence and renewing our minds in the Word, that inner sense is often Him. That is discernment. Not just a Holy Spirit detector for bad things but the ability to see both what God is doing and what the enemy is doing in a situation.What Blocks You From Hearing His VoiceOne of the biggest barriers to hearing God is not lack of effort. It is condemnation.Romans 8:1 - There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.Condemnation is a legal term. It is the moment a judge looks at you and declares you guilty and announces your punishment. And that verdict no longer applies to anyone who is in Christ. Not because what you did does not matter but because He took the punishment for it.So that voice that says you are an idiot, you are stupid, you already failed before, you will never change, why would God want to speak to you, that is not God. That is the enemy who has watched for thousands of years as people fold under that kind of pressure because they do not really believe what they say they believe.God's voice brings you up. It calls you forward. Even when He corrects you, the goal is to open more freedom in your life. Even when He disciplines, it is to move you toward the things He has for you which are always good.Conviction is completely different from condemnation. Conviction is the Holy Spirit saying, hey, this is not who you are. This is not what you were made for. Take my hand and let me walk you back into freedom. That is not shame. That is love with direction.If you cannot tell the difference between condemnation and conviction, it is very difficult to begin to learn God's voice. So start there. You are not standing in front of a judge anymore. You are standing before a Father who loves you and wants to speak to you.Simple Ways to BeginHere are the foundations Erik and Mayana laid out for anyone who wants to grow in hearing God's voice:Spend time with Him. This is everything. Matthew 7:7 - ask, seek, knock. It is a promise that He will not leave you hanging. The more time you spend with Him the more familiar His voice becomes. Just like Mayana said, if she were blindfolded in a room full of voices, she would recognize Erik's voice because she knows him. She has spent time with him. That is how you learn to recognize God's voice. You spend time with Him.Know the Word. The Bible is your protection. When a thought or impression comes, the first filter is simple, does this line up with who God is and who He says I am? Does it line up with His Word? If you do not know the Word, that filter does not exist. The Word is instruction, it is also how you learn to recognize the character and nature of the God who is speaking to you.Ask Him to speak. Say it out loud. Lord, I want to hear you. I want to grow in this. Treat prayer as a two-way conversation, not just a monologue. Spend time speaking and then spend time listening.Honor even the imperfect steps. Learning to hear God is like learning a new language. You are going to say the word wrong sometimes. You are going to step out and wonder if you heard right. He honors the posture of your heart. Even when things do not go the way you expected after you stepped out in faith, what He is looking for is the motive. Were you trying to hear Him? He will honor that.The Simple TruthMy sheep know how I communicate with them.That verse is an invitation. Intimacy and guidance are available directly from your Father in heaven. A daily living relationship with a God who wants to speak to you, not just in church on Sunday, not just through a pastor, but personally, directly, in the middle of your actual life, that is what He is offering.It does not happen overnight. It is a journey. But it starts with one conviction: He wants to speak to you more than you want to hear Him.Start there. Give Him the time. Come to Him without condemnation. Open the Word. Ask Him to speak. And then pay attention.Isaiah 30:21 - Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, this is the way, walk in it.﻿He is already speaking. Hearing God — Part 1: The Theological Foundation

<h3>Shame is one of the most powerful forces operating in a person's life, and one of the least talked about honestly.</h3>Not guilt. Guilt says you did something wrong. Shame says you are something wrong. And that distinction is everything, because guilt can lead to repentance and restoration, but shame leads somewhere else entirely. It leads to hiding. To performance. To the exhausting work of managing how you appear so that nobody ever sees what you actually believe about yourself underneath.Most people living under shame have never named it that way. They just know they feel like they are never quite enough. That their failures define them more than their identity does. That if the people around them really knew them, really saw the full picture, something would be lost that they cannot afford to lose.That is shame. And it is not from God.<h3>Where Shame Comes From</h3>Shame entered the human story early. Genesis 3:7 describes what happened immediately after the fall: "Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths."Before sin, Adam and Eve were naked and unashamed. After sin, the first thing they did was cover themselves. The first response to broken relationship with God was not just guilt over what they had done, it was shame about who they now believed themselves to be. And the covering that followed was the first picture of what shame always produces: hiding, self-protection, and the attempt to manage what others see. That pattern has been repeating ever since.Shame can come from what was done to you: abuse, neglect, rejection, or words spoken over you that were never true but landed deep anyway. It can come from what you have done: failures, choices, seasons of your life you wish you could erase. It can come from what you were taught to believe about yourself growing up, from environments where love felt conditional and worth felt earned.The source varies. The effect is always the same: a deep, persistent belief that something is fundamentally wrong with you that needs to be hidden, managed, or overcome before you can be truly accepted.<h3>What Shame Actually Does</h3>Shame is not passive. It is one of the most active forces in a person's inner life: quietly driving decisions, shaping relationships, and determining what feels possible and what does not.It drives performance; the relentless need to achieve, present well, and earn approval because somewhere deep down you believe your actual self is not enough. It drives people pleasing, the inability to disappoint others, because their disapproval confirms what shame has already told you. It drives addiction, the reach for something that numbs the pain of believing you are fundamentally broken. It drives isolation, the pulling away from real community, because vulnerability feels too dangerous when you believe what shame says about you.And perhaps most destructively, shame drives a distorted view of God. When you carry shame, it is almost impossible to receive grace fully. You approach God with the same posture you bring to everyone else, managing, performing, trying to be enough, because somewhere underneath, you do not actually believe His acceptance is unconditional.Hebrews 10:22 describes the solution and, in doing so, reveals the problem: "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water."Full assurance. A clean conscience. Drawing near with a true heart, not a managed one, not a performing one, but a true one. That is what shame steals. A double portion in its place. God does not simply erase the shame; He replaces it with inheritance. With identity. With something that belongs to you, not because you earned it but because of who He is and what He has done.Romans 8:1 is one of the most important verses for anyone who has lived under the weight of shame: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."No condemnation. Not reduced condemnation. Not condemnation that has been paid down but still carries interest. None. The basis for shame, the belief that you are fundamentally condemned, that something is irreparably wrong with you, has been dealt with completely at the cross.And Romans 10:11 adds the promise that anchors everything: "For the Scripture says, 'Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.'"Not some. Not the ones who have it together. Everyone who believes. Shame has no ultimate claim on the person whose identity is rooted in Christ, not because they have performed their way out of it, but because He has declared it finished.<h3>Why Shame Is So Hard to Let Go</h3>If the gospel removes shame, why do so many believers still live under it?Because shame operates at the level of belief, not just knowledge. You can know Romans 8:1 by memory and still feel condemned every morning. You can quote the gospel accurately and still approach God as though you are on thin ice. You can believe the right things theologically and still be functionally living as though shame's verdict is the true one.The gap between knowing truth and living from it is exactly where shame does its most persistent work. It does not need you to reject the gospel intellectually. It just needs you to keep experiencing God through the filter of what you believe about yourself, rather than what He has declared to be true.Closing that gap requires more than information. It requires the kind of honest, personal, rooted work that brings the specific beliefs shame has produced, the exact agreements you have made about who you are, into direct contact with what God actually says. Not in the abstract. In the specific.<h3>There Is Another Way to Live</h3>Shame tells you to hide. The gospel calls you into the light.1 John 1:7 says, "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin."Walking in the light, bringing what is true about you into honest relationship with God and with trusted people, is the environment where shame loses its power. Shame thrives in darkness and cannot survive in the presence of grace.You were not designed to carry this. You were not designed to manage it, hide it, or perform your way past it. You were designed to bring it to the One who already knows it completely, has already dealt with it fully, gave you a new identity, and gives you the grace to walk free from it.&nbsp;That is not weakness. What the Bible Says About Shame — And How to Stop Letting It Run Your Life

<h3>If you've ever looked at a pattern in your life and thought, I swore I would never be like this, you already know what generational cycles feel like.</h3>Maybe it's the same anger that ran through your father. The same anxiety your mother carried. The same patterns around alcohol, control, relationships, or avoidance that you watched growing up and promised yourself would stop with you. And yet here you are, somewhere in your adult life, watching the same things show up in ways you didn't fully see coming.That moment of recognition is not condemnation. It is an invitation to understand what is actually happening and to find out where these cycles genuinely end.<h3>What Generational Cycles Actually Are</h3>A generational cycle is a pattern of belief, behavior, or response that gets passed down through families; not always intentionally, not always visibly, but consistently. It moves from one generation to the next through what is modeled, what is normalized, what is left unaddressed, and what gets quietly believed about identity, worth, relationships, and God.Some of these patterns are visible: addiction, anger, abandonment, and abuse. Others are more subtle: performance, people pleasing, fear, control, emotional distance, or the quiet belief that you are not quite enough and never quite safe.What makes them generational is not just that they repeat. It is that they get absorbed before you are old enough to question them. The beliefs that drive them become part of how you see yourself and the world before you have any framework to evaluate whether they are actually true.And by the time you are old enough to recognize them, they have been operating beneath the surface for years.<h3>What the Bible Says About Generational Patterns</h3>Scripture is not silent on this. Exodus 20:5 acknowledges the reality of patterns that move through generations, "for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation..."This verse has been misread as God punishing children for the sins of their parents. But what it is actually describing is the natural consequence of patterns left unaddressed: the way unresolved sin, unhealed wounds, and deeply held false beliefs ripple forward through families when they are never brought into the light and broken.The good news is that the same passage does not end there. It continues, "but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments." The pattern of blessing and freedom moves even further than the pattern of bondage. God's design was always for cycles to be broken and for freedom to multiply.Ezekiel 18:20 makes the individual responsibility equally clear: "The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son."You are not doomed to repeat what came before you. The cycle is not your destiny. But it will not break on its own.<h3>Why Cycles Are So Hard to Break</h3>Here is the honest answer: cycles are hard to break because they operate at the level of belief, not just behavior.Most people who recognize a generational pattern in their life try to address it by changing the behavior. They decide they will not drink like their father did. They will not explode in anger like they watched growing up. They will not abandon their family or repeat the patterns they experienced as a child.And then they find themselves, years later, doing some version of the very thing they swore they would not do. Not because they were not trying. Not because they did not mean it. But because the belief underneath the behavior, the one that says this is who people like me are, this is how life works, this is what I deserve or what I am capable of, never got addressed.Behavior modification does not break generational cycles. It manages them temporarily while the root keeps growing.Proverbs 4:23 points to where the real work happens: "Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life."The heart. The inner life. The beliefs, the wounds, the agreements you have made about who you are and what is true. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."This is not motivational language. This is a declaration about identity. In Christ, you are not simply a reformed version of what came before you. You are a new creation, one whose identity is no longer rooted in what was passed down but in what Christ accomplished on the cross and declared over you.Breaking a generational cycle requires bringing the pattern into the light; being honest about what has been operating beneath the surface and taking genuine responsibility for your part in it. It requires identifying the beliefs that have been driving the behavior, not just managing the behavior itself. And it requires the ongoing, active work of Romans 12:2, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."God's grace is fuel, and the new identity He paid for is the foundation. And the fruit, the thing that actually stops the pattern from moving to the next generation, is a life that looks genuinely different because God has made you new in His presence.&nbsp;That is the kind of freedom that multiplies forward. Not just sobriety. Not just managed behavior. <h3>If you've spent your life making sure everyone around you is okay, you already know the exhaustion that comes with it.</h3>How many times have you said yes when you really wanted to say no? How many times have you shrunken yourself to fit into rooms you know you've outgrown? How many times have you over-explained, over-apologized, and spent more time managing how others see you than you do living the life God actually called you to? And somewhere underneath all of it is a question you might not have named yet: whose approval am I actually living for?People pleasing looks like kindness on the surface. But underneath it is something the Bible addresses directly — the fear of man. And it is one of the most subtle and destructive patterns a believer can live from.<h3>What People Pleasing Actually Is</h3>People pleasing is not just a personality trait or a social habit. It is a functional belief system; one that says the approval of other people is necessary for your safety, your worth, or your sense of self.It shows up differently for different people. For some, it looks like never saying no, always accommodating, and quietly resenting the weight of it. For others, it looks like performance: working harder, achieving more, presenting a version of yourself that earns approval and keeps criticism at bay. For others, it can look like conflict avoidance; staying silent, keeping the peace, and never letting anyone see what you actually think or feel.The behavior varies. The root is the same. Somewhere, at some point, you learned that your value was conditional; that love, acceptance, or safety depended on how well you managed the perceptions of the people around you.And that belief has been running the show ever since.<h3>Why People Pleasing Is a Spiritual Problem</h3>This is where most conversations about people pleasing stop short. They identify the behavior, offer some advice on boundaries, and send you on your way. But for the believer, people pleasing is not just a psychological pattern; it is a worship problem.When the fear of what others think drives your decisions more than the truth of what God says, you are functionally worshipping the opinion of man. Not intentionally. Not consciously. But functionally, meaning it is actually running your life, whether you realize it or not.Proverbs 29:25 names it plainly: "The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe."A snare. Not an inconvenience, not a personality quirk; a trap. The fear of man is a spiritual snare that keeps you performing for an audience that was never meant to define you, seeking approval from people who were never equipped to give you what only God can.And the longer you live from it, the smaller your life becomes. Decisions get made based on what others will think. Callings get suppressed because they might make someone uncomfortable. Truth gets swallowed because saying it might cost you someone's approval.That is not freedom. Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ."Paul draws a direct line between people pleasing and the inability to fully serve Christ. You cannot live for both. When the approval of man becomes the primary currency you're operating from, something of your calling gets compromised. Not because God stops working, but because you stop being fully available.John 12:43 describes the Pharisees who believed in Jesus but would not confess it publicly, "for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God."They believed the right things and still couldn't move because the fear of man held them in place. That is exactly what people pleasing does to a believer. It creates a gap between what you know and what you live, between who God says you are and who you allow yourself to be in front of others.<h3>What Freedom From People Pleasing Actually Looks Like</h3>Freedom from people pleasing is not becoming indifferent to others. It is not becoming harsh, self-centered, or uncaring. The goal is not to stop loving people; it is to stop needing their approval to function.The shift happens when the opinion of God becomes more real and more weighty than the opinion of the people around you. When what He says about you is the foundation you stand on, not what others think, not what you fear they might conclude, not the worst-case scenario you've been performing to prevent.Colossians 3:23-24 reorients the whole thing: "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."Work as for the Lord. Live as for the Lord. Speak as for the Lord. When He becomes your primary audience, everything else recalibrates. You can say the hard thing because you're not performing for man. You can set the boundary because your worth isn't on the line. You can show up as who you actually are because His approval isn't conditional on your performance.<h3>Where the Real Work Happens</h3>Knowing this and actually living it are two different things, and the gap between them is where most people stay stuck.The fear of man is not just a thought pattern. It is a deeply held belief formed over years of learning what was safe, what earned love, and what kept the peace. You cannot think your way out of it. You cannot white-knuckle your way to freedom from it. It requires the kind of honest, rooted identity work that goes beneath the behavior to the belief driving it.Romans 12:2 points to the only real solution: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."Transformation. Not behavior management. Not better boundaries techniques. A renewed mind, one that has been so thoroughly shaped by truth that the fear of man loses its grip because the approval of God has become more real.That is the work. How to Stop People Pleasing as a Christian — What the Bible Says About the Fear of Man

<h3>Most people who are afraid to surrender to God are afraid of the wrong thing.</h3>They picture surrender as loss. As giving up control and watching their life fall apart. As becoming passive, weak, or invisible. As handing God a blank check and hoping He doesn't cash it in a way that costs them everything they love.That fear might make sense to the person who hasn't experienced His goodness yet, but only if surrender means what culture says it means. But it doesn't. And until you understand what surrendering to God actually is, that fear will keep you at arm's length from the very thing that produces the freedom you're looking for.<h3>Why This Word Trips People Up</h3>Surrender is a loaded word. In every other context, it means defeat. You surrender when you've lost. You surrender when you have no options left. You surrender when the fight is over, and you're on the wrong side of it.So when someone tells you to surrender to God, it can feel like they're asking you to lose. To give up. To stop mattering.But that is not the biblical picture of surrender at all.The confusion comes from importing a military definition into a relational context. Surrendering to an enemy and surrendering to a Father are two completely different things. One is defeat. The other is coming home. When you surrender your life to God, you are not surrendering to defeat but to His glorious victory on the cross.&nbsp;<h3>What Surrender Is Not</h3>Before we can understand what surrender actually is, it helps to clear away what it isn't.Surrender is not passivity. Some people hear surrender and picture a life of sitting still, waiting for God to do everything while they do nothing. But Scripture never teaches that. Faith without works is dead, and James 1:22 calls us to be doers of the Word. Surrender doesn't mean you stop moving; it means you stop moving in your own strength and start moving in His.Surrender is not the absence of desire. God did not create you to be emotionless or without longing. Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." Surrender doesn't erase your desires; it purifies them and aligns them with what God actually has for you.Surrender is not weakness. This may be the biggest misconception of all. Culture equates surrender with weakness because culture measures strength by control. But 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." In God's economy, the person who lays down self-sufficiency and trusts Him completely is not weak. They are standing on the most unshakeable foundation available.Surrender is not losing yourself. Many people fear that if they fully surrender to God, their voice and personality will disappear. But the opposite is true. Surrendering to God doesn't erase who you are. Not a dead one, a living one. Active and present in the ongoing adventure with Jesus. Surrender in Scripture is not a one-time transaction. It is a daily posture of offering your will, plans, and your need for control. Surrender is giving it to God and trusting Him with what comes next.It is also worth saying clearly that surrender is not blind. It is not naive. It is not ignoring reality or pretending everything is fine. Surrender is the eyes-open decision to trust a God whose character you have come to know, whose faithfulness is documented across every page of Scripture, and whose love for you was demonstrated at the cross.<h3>Why Surrender Feels So Hard</h3>If surrender is coming home to God's victory, why does it feel so terrifying?Because self-rule is familiar. Because control, even when it's exhausting and failing, feels safer than trusting something you can't fully see. Because somewhere along the way, most of us learned that depending on anyone, including God, was dangerous.And because the enemy works hard to make surrender look like loss. If he can keep you managing your own life in your own strength, he doesn't need to do much else. The exhaustion will do the work for him.Proverbs 3:5-6 speaks directly into this: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."Not leaning on your own understanding. That is the heart of surrender, not the absence of thought or effort, but the refusal to make yourself the final authority on your own life.<h3>What Happens When You Actually Surrender</h3>This is the part that doesn't get talked about enough.Surrender is not where you lose your life. It is where you find it. Jesus said it plainly in Matthew 16:25 "For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."The person who holds on tightest to control is the one who ends up with the least. The person who opens their hands and trusts God with what they cannot manage is the one who finds the peace, the clarity, and the freedom that all the striving never produced.That is not a theory. For anyone who has walked through genuine surrender, who has laid down self-rule and experienced what it feels like to be held by God rather than holding everything yourself, it is the most real thing they know.<h3>Where Surrender Meets Real Life</h3>Surrender doesn't happen in the abstract. It happens in the specific.It happens in the moment you choose honesty over image management. Surrender happens when you finally stop defending unhealthy patterns in your life and start bringing them into His light. It happens when you stop white-knuckling life and place it in God's hands. It takes place in the relationship where you stop trying to control and start trusting Him.It is rarely dramatic. It is usually quiet, personal, and repeated. What Does Surrendering to God Actually Mean? (And What It Doesn't)

<h3>God has a sense of humor. And if you know Him and you're paying attention, you can catch it often.</h3>But sometimes He comes crashing through with something so loud, so perfectly timed, so absolutely hilarious, that you can't do anything but laugh, cry, and worship all at once.This episode is one of those stories.<h3>The Joke That Started It All</h3>For about a year, Erik had a running joke in the Frederickson household. He'd come home and tell Mayana he had a gift for her. She'd get excited. And then he'd say. "I got you a minivan."&nbsp;Every single time.Mayana's response never changed. She didn't want a minivan. She would never drive a minivan. It wasn't funny the first time, and it certainly wasn't funny the fifteenth time.But Erik kept doing it anyway.What they didn't know was that God was watching. And apparently, He thought it was hilarious too.<h3>The Road That Led to Ohio</h3>Before the minivan story lands, you need to understand the journey that brought them there.Early in their marriage, Erik and Mayana felt called to move to Utah. God was doing incredible things: house meetings, people were being healed and saved, a kind of underground move of the Spirit. During this time they felt God lead them to move to Utah, so they went.&nbsp;It was hard. Harder than expected. Mayana, a Brazilian who had never seen snow before, found herself shoveling it. Ten months in, she looked at Erik and said simply, "I'm going back to San Diego. You can come if you want, but I'm leaving."&nbsp;Erik didn't hesitate. She was more important. They went back.They landed in San Diego, living in a friend's back room, nearly a year of trusting God while Erik was building his coaching practice from the ground up, driving for Uber at night to make ends meet, and watching Holy Spirit encounter people in his car while driving Uber almost every single night.Eventually, the call came to move again. This time, Ohio.Mayana wasn't about to make the same mistake twice. She came out for ten days first to check it out. In those ten days, she experienced rain, a light snow that melted by noon, freezing cold, and then heat. Classic Ohio spring.She said yes anyway. Something about the community here, people who had been friends since preschool, who did life together without needing an appointment, called to something deep in her.They packed everything into a U-Haul, loaded up their boys, and drove six days across the country. Erik got the job offer on day two of driving. Twenty, maybe thirty minutes after arriving, they were unloading the U-Haul when their neighbor came over. She had been to some of the house meetings Erik had done in Ohio before the move. They knew each other a little.She walked up and said warmly, "We are so glad you guys are here. My husband and I were talking, and we just want to bless you. We want to give you our minivan."&nbsp;Erik started laughing.He told her about the joke, the year of coming home and saying, babe, I got you a minivan, the eye rolls, the complete lack of amusement from his wife. Then he said, "I'm going to go get Mayana. Don't explain anything. Just tell her what you told me."He went inside. Brought Mayana out. The neighbor said it again, totally matter of fact, "We want to give you our minivan."&nbsp;Mayana's face said everything. She looked at the neighbor, then at Erik, rolling her eyes. "A minivan? I hate minivans."&nbsp;The neighbor pointed down the street, "No, see that one right there? That's yours."&nbsp;The next day, they brought it over with a bow. Cleaned, full of gas, wrapped in a bow, a free minivan from a neighbor they barely knew, on the very day they arrived in their new city.Mayana loved that minivan. Because God gave it to her. And you can't help but love something God gives you, even when He's clearly laughing while He does it.But That's Not Even the Best PartThe same day the minivan arrived, a friend deposited $7,000 into Erik's PayPal account.No warning. No request. Just, here.Seven. The number of completion in the Bible. A new season. The other side of the test.The storm was over. The foundation had held. And God showed up not just with provision, but with a punchline that only He could have written.<h3>What God Does in the Mess</h3>This episode isn't really about a minivan. It's about what happens when you go through the storms of life, leaning on God instead of running from Him.Erik and Mayana were honest about it: Utah was hard. Living in someone else's back room was humbling. Driving across the country on faith with two kids and no certainty was filled with uncertainties. These were real struggles, real seasons of not knowing what was next.But on the other side of those storms, they came away with something that can't be taught in a classroom or a Sunday service. They came away knowing God a little better.&nbsp;"When you go through it over and over," Mayana said, "you get to a point that you start partnering with God and say, okay, what are you doing here? You learn to trust."And Erik put it simply: "You will trust God to the degree that you believe He's good."<h3>Encountering God in the Storm — Mayana's Hurricane Ian Story</h3>There's another story woven into this episode that deserves its own full episode, and they'll be sharing it soon.During Hurricane Ian in September 2022, Erik and Mayana and their three boys stayed in their Southwest Florida home as the storm parked directly on top of them for eight hours. The sustained winds were just five miles an hour under a Category 5. Two by fours were flying past the windows. Garbage cans were airborne.Mayana, who had battled panic attacks in her past, began to feel one coming on. She was on the floor, hands over her ears, crying out to God,, "Help me, help me, you need to help me right now."&nbsp;And then something happened that she will never forget.She felt hands come down on the sides of her face. Fingers pointing downward, cradling her head. The presence of God, physical, unmistakable, undeniable, settled on her in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane.She went from barely holding it together to standing up with a look on her face Erik had never seen before. Peaceful. Still. Almost like she was drunk, but not on wine."Be filled with the Spirit," Paul wrote in Ephesians. Not with wine, but with the presence of God.She felt those hands for over two hours. She didn't want it to end.<h3>God Uses the Broken Ones</h3>Before they close, Erik and Mayana land on something important.If you think you have to be qualified, cleaned up, together, and impressive for God to use you, you've missed the story entirely.He came for the lost. The broken. The ones who know they need a doctor. He chose twelve disciples who were fishermen, tax collectors, political radicals, and social outcasts. He picked the worst of society, transformed their lives, and used them to confuse everyone who thought they had it all figured out."How much more glory does He get when He uses somebody everybody looks at and says, there's no way that person can do that. That has to be God."That is the whole message. Not that we are capable. But that He is.<h3>A Prayer for You</h3>At the close of the episode, Mayana prayed over every person listening:"Father, we love you with all of our hearts. Thank you that you don't change based on anyone's circumstances, qualifications, or degrees. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. I pray you encounter your people. Reveal yourself to them. Surround them with your protection. Show them your love. Transform them inside out, Jesus. Get their hearts. Get their families. Unite them for your powerful purpose, in the name of Jesus Christ.
